When a professor places an item on reserve, she or he determines how long the item may be borrowed, and whether or not it may leave the building.  In most cases, reserve books are for library use only, and cannot be taken from the building.  However, you may ask at the circulation desk what the loan period is for a particular item, and see if it can be used outside of the library.
