How long can I expect to wait to receive a book from Interlibrary Loan?
The length of time for receiving a book via Interlibrary loan can vary. We generally tell people to allow up to 2 weeks. Electronic articles may arrive more quickly, sometimes as fast as 24 hours. Here's what makes it tough to be more specific:
Our staff place the request as soon as you submit it. Our system searches to find it at another library who will be willing to send it to us for you to use, and we send off the request. All of this happens electronically, and usually within 24 hours or less of the time you place the request.
After that, it is largely out of our hands. Most libraries will move pretty quickly, but can often take a few days to get the request, find the book, prepare it, and ship it out. Then you have to add a couple of days for shipping time, which will vary depending on how far away the item must travel!
Once it arrives, we unpack it, check it in, and notify you. You will be notified within hours of its arrival in the building.
It often takes less than 2 weeks, but to be safe that is a good ballpark figure. You can always log onto your Illiad account where you place your ILL requests to check the status.
