Answer

The Libraries have books in print and electronic formats. There are lots of different ways to access these materials, but here are some suggestions.

  • If you're just getting started or if you're looking for new resources:
    • Use Scout to search for your topic, then use the limiters on the left side of the page to narrow your results.
  • If you are looking for a specific book, or books by a particular author:
    • Use Scout to search for the title. This usually works best when you place the title in quotation marks: "The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World".
    • Use Scout to search by author. This usually works best when you don't place the author's name in quotation marks, since authors' names can be listed in many different ways (William Faulkner; Faulkner, William; William Cuthbert Faulkner; William C. Faulkner, etc.).
    • If you'd like, you can also go directly to the Libraries' Classic Catalog.

When you find the book you need, be sure to note: the library where the book is located, the book's status (whether or not it's available to be checked out), and its call number.

The call number is like an address label; it tells you where the book "lives" in the library. Write it down and take it to the elevator, where (in Gorgas) there's a sign showing on which floor a book can be found in the library based on its call number. Once you make it to the floor, use the signs on the ends of shelves to locate the book (on most floors, there's a sign on the wall next to the elevator that can help point you in the right direction).

Please let us know if you need help finding books in Scout or on the library shelves. We're happy to help.
